Vehicle Confiscation in the UAE: What to Do and How to Get Your Car Released

A confiscated vehicle isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a process with its own rules, its own timeline, and its own paperwork trail, and most drivers only encounter it once, at the worst possible time to be learning it from scratch.

Why vehicles get impounded

Certain violations trigger automatic impoundment, not just a fine — reckless or dangerous driving, extreme speeding, driving without valid insurance or registration, and repeat serious offenses are the common ones. The vehicle is taken to an impound yard, and it stays there until the case is resolved and the release process is completed — it isn’t returned automatically once time passes.

How long, and what it costs

Impound periods typically range from about a week to as long as 90 days, depending on the severity of the violation — a first serious offense sits at the shorter end, repeat or extreme cases at the longer end. Release involves a service fee (commonly around AED 100 for standard cases, with an added charge if the vehicle isn’t collected within the allowed window) plus daily storage charges that accrue for every day the car sits in the yard — so the fee grows the longer it’s left. For the most serious violations, total costs can run far higher. These figures vary by violation and by emirate, and by the time you’re reading this the exact numbers may have moved — always confirm the current figure with RTA or Police before assuming a cost.

The actual release process

1. Confirm the reason for impoundment and which authority is holding the case (Police or RTA, depending on the violation and emirate).
2. Clear any outstanding fines tied to the vehicle or the driver — an impounded car generally won’t be released with unpaid fines still open.
3. Pay the impound release/service fee and any accrued storage charges.
4. Submit the release request through the relevant portal or in person, and collect the vehicle once approved.

None of these steps are individually complicated. What makes it time-consuming is that they’re spread across different systems and sometimes different offices, and a missing document or an unpaid fine you didn’t know about resets the clock.
