Can You Appeal a Failed Vehicle Inspection in Dubai?

When a vehicle fails its RTA technical inspection, most owners jump straight to booking a repair. Fewer know there’s a separate path worth understanding first: appealing the result itself, rather than just fixing what was flagged.

Appeal, and a common mix-up worth clearing up

If you believe the technical inspection finding was wrong — not that you’re unhappy about having to fix a genuine fault, but that you disagree with the assessment itself — you can request to present your case to the RTA’s Technical Inspection Committee, booked through the Vehicle Registration and Inspection Centres.

It’s worth being precise here, because a lot of guides online blur two completely different things together: this is the vehicle roadworthiness inspection (Tasjeel), not the driving road test learner drivers sit for a licence. The road-test appeal has its own separate process, fee, and a much tighter filing window. If your search results mention a specific fee and a two-day deadline, that’s almost certainly the driving-test process, not this one.

When appealing actually makes sense

An appeal is the right move when you have a specific, genuine disagreement with a technical finding — for example, you believe a standard was misapplied, or the vehicle wasn’t assessed in its normal running condition. It isn’t the right move just because a repair is inconvenient or the finding is unwelcome.

In practice, most failures don’t call for an appeal at all. If the fault flagged is real, going straight to repair and retest inside your 30-day window is almost always faster and cheaper than contesting the finding.

What the appeal process actually involves

You book an appointment through the Vehicle Registration and Inspection Centres to present your case to the Technical Inspection Committee. Fees and current appointment lead times aren’t something we’ll quote a fixed figure on here — they’re worth confirming directly with the centre or on rta.ae before you commit, since administrative fees do get revised.

One thing to keep in mind either way: pursuing an appeal doesn’t pause your 30-day repair-and-retest clock. If you go down the appeal route and it doesn’t change the outcome, you don’t want to discover the window has quietly run out in the meantime.
